Time to sound like a textbook... ^^;;
If you don't already know, the word "Anime" is usually used to distinguish between Japanese cartoons and Western cartoons. "Manga" is used to distinguish between Japanese comics and Western comics.
Whereas cartoons and comics in the West are aimed mainly at children, Anime and Manga are aimed at audiences ranging from little kids to the eldery. Many Anime series go beyond silly slapstick comedy and seasons of unrelated episodes by containing real character development and plots.
